Current therapy for gastric ulcer is performed based on drugs that inhibit acidic secretion of the stomach, preferably cytoprotective drugs. However, such medications have numerous side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and hyperthermia; besides contraindications for pregnant women, as they have a teratogenic effect (fetal malformations) and abortive action (Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de São Paulo, 2010).
The active compounds of Casearia sylvestris presents effective action in the treatment of ulcers, with reduction of side effects and without contraindications, besides acting in severe, moderate and mild ulcers.
