Pain is a sensation based on environmental signals that are transmitted and interpreted in the brain. Damage and inflammation of nerves and tissues can alter the normal perception of pain causing the state of hyperalgesia. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used in the treatment of pain and fever for more than 3,500 years. NSAIDs are indicated for mild to moderate pain, and because of their anti-inflammatory effect, they can be used for the treatment of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. It is estimated that more than 2 million people suffer from chronic pain in the US, 20-30% of americans consume NSAIDs once a year and 1-2% make daily use. Pain was considered as the 5th vital sign of hospital care by the Brazilian Society of Pain Studies.
