Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease with high mortality rates and its eradication is considered impossible due to its wide variety of hosts. One of the major problems presented by canine distemper is the fact that the clinical signs are similar to those observed in other respiratory and enteric diseases of dogs, making it difficult to diagnose and require laboratory confirmation. Several techniques are used for the diagnosis of canine distemper, but all of them present great limitations, requiring more than ten days of analysis between collection and confirmation in the laboratory, besides the high cost of the analysis. This new technology is capable of detecting canine distemper virus in a fast, sensitive manner and with high sensitivity and specificity when compared to more modern techniques of analysis such as RT-PCR.
The new kit presents excellent biocompatibility and easy conjugation to proteins, making it ideal as a biomarker for the detection of canine distemper. It can also be used by an untrained operator, since the result shows a change in the color of the solution when positive. With this methodology the veterinarian can start the medical treatment without having to wait the ten days of analysis by conventional methods. Another key point is the low cost of this diagnostic test compared to the others currently available.
